Pretoria — Ekurhuleni bus commuters will have to dig deeper in their pockets as bus tariffs increase.
The increase, which will be effective from Friday, July 1, is due to the rise in fuel prices, maintenance and normal inflationary increases, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality said on Monday.
“While we regret to advise commuters of these developments, we currently have a situation where the cost to render the service is currently higher than the income generated,” the metro’s spokesperson Zweli Dlamini explained.
Bus tariffs in respect of all trips within the magisterial districts of Boksburg and Germiston will therefore increase as follows:
A single trip for scholars paying cash will jump from R9 to R9.50.
Scholar 10-trip coupon: from R65 per 10 trip coupon (R6.50 per trip) to R70 (R7 per trip).
Scholar 44-trip coupon: from R286 (R6.50 per trip) to R308 (R7 per trip).
Adults paying cash will now pay R10.50 per trip. An adult 10-trip coupon will cost R80, up from R75.
While an adult 10-trip transfer coupon will now be R120, they will pay R528 per transfer trip coupon for a 44-trip transfer coupon.
Pensioners and disabled people using cash will now pay R5 per trip. They, however, must register at the Bus Depot to qualify for this rebate.
