Bangui — Mgr Eduard Mathos, Bishop of Bambari, Central African Republic, has returned to his Episcopate under military escort. This is what local Church sources told Fides.

Mgr. Mathos had taken refuge in the village of Ngerengou, after being the victim of an ambush by a guerrilla group that had kidnapped him.

Fides sources added other details regarding the kidnapping of the Bishop, on June 2. “Mgr Mathos was travelling in his car. A vehicle of the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS), the humanitarian organization sponsored by the Jesuits, was following him.

The guerrillas blocked both cars. After a few hours they went away, releasing Mgr Mathos but taking the two cars and the two drivers. Afterwards, the driver of the JRS managed to escape. Mgr Mathos’s driver is still in the hands of the kidnappers.
