The over 150,000 athletes expected at the 2011 National Sports Festival(Garden City Games ) have been assured of comfortable accommodation by the organizer of the games.
Rivers State Commissioner for Information, Helen Ibim Semenitari said as host of the games, the state government has made the welfare of the athletes a top priority in their plans.
She said that the government is committed to making the games a reference point in all ramifications, and has spent huge sum of money in ensuring that the University of Port Harcourt hostels are fitted with new facilities to ensure comfort of the athletes.
“We want the athletes to be very comfortable. The welfare of the athletes is a priority. Our governor, Honourable Rotimi Amaechi insisted that the athletes should get the best with at least four persons in a room. We have changed all the sanitary wares and other facilities in the hostels with brand new ones.
She also said that participants are guaranteed fun as the entertainment centre at the Games village have been equipped to give everyone full dose of fun during the games.
“Every Rivers state person is committed to the success of the games. Beyond the games, there is the beauty of the people to be appreciated. At the games village entertainment centre, people can see the site and sound of Rivers State.
The Commissioner further said that all the venue and facilities for the games are ready, saying that all contractors will be out of site by June 18.
“Facilities at the new stadium are ready, but we will not make use of the mainbowl. In all the venues, we have the latest qualities. The opening and closing ceremony will take place at the Liberation Stadium,Elekahia.Just as Rivers ’88 has remained a reference point in the history of the sports festival, Garden Coty 2011 will take the games to a different level.
Speaking on the transport arrangement, Mrs. Semenitari said that 220 buses have been dedicated for the smooth operation during the games.
“Transportation has been taken care of with the dedication of 220 buses. We have also secured special lane for the games, vehicles”, she said.
