Kenya: National Special Olympic Depart on Monday for World Games

Special Olympics Kenya team of 32 athletes and 10 coaches depart on Monday for the 13th edition of World Summer Games in Athens, Greece. The team received the flag from the Minister of Sports Paul Otuoma ahead of the global event that will bring together 7,000 athletes. The national trials were held in October last year, attracting over 200 athletes from all over the country.

The Kenya team comprise girls football ( Rift Valley), boys handball ( Nairobi), girls volleyball (Western Province) and athletics. Special Olympics Kenya has consistently participated in all World Summer Games since joining the world movement in 1978. In the last games held in Shanghai, China in 2007, Kenya won four gold medals and 22 silvers. Special Olympics Kenya have so far raised over Sh10 million towards the tour with the government through the Ministry of Sports and Ministry of Education donating equipment worth Sh1.3m.
