Nairobi — The Dasani Golf Gala series enters the ninth leg, with the Coast regional qualifiers at the tough Nyali Golf and Country Club course in Mombasa this weekend.
This will be the furthest the series, sponsored by Coca-Cola, will have gone from Nairobi after visiting nearby districts of Machakos and Thika. A total of 118 players drawn from Nyali, Mombasa, Leisure Lodge, Malindi and Vipingo in teams of four players each, will be all out to grab the three slots available for the region.
The teams will join 22 others which have already qualified from Kiambu, Limuru, Vet Lab, Machakos, Muthaiga, Sigona, Thika and Windsor. Among the teams expected to vie for the slots include that of veteran golfers Terry Kaguta, Joseph Wamunyua, Samson Mbarathi, and youngster Alan Dainty.
Nyali Club ready Nyali captain George Nesbit said Nyali was all set to host the event.
“We have a big entry, and the weather is very accommodating. Golfers are assured of an excellent time here,” said Nesbit. Coca-Cola’s East Africa general manager, Peter Njonjo, said the ultimate prize of a trip to the Tour Championship in the USA has motivated the players and more than 1,000 golfers have so far participated in the series.
The grand finale this year will be staged at Karen Country Club in August, where the winning team will win an all-expenses paid trip to the Tour Championship to be held at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.
The winning team will also get an opportunity to visit some of the most prestigious golf course such as the TPC Sugarloaf and the TPC SawGrass before visiting Coca Cola headquarters in Atlanta.
Meanwhile, Nyahururu Sports Club and Limuru Country Club will host the Kenya Forests Services-sponsored Misitu Golf Challenge, whose main objective is to create awareness about Kenya’s forests and conservation of natural resources. Both tournaments have attracted huge fields.
At the same time, Muthaiga Club will today host the Ladies’ Invitation sponsored by President Mwai Kibaki, while the Crown Berger Next Generation four ball greensomes begin on Saturday.
