The Irishman, speaking after the announcement of the club’s Premier League fixtures, said he is in talks with players and agents in an attempt to spend the money from the sale of midfielder Jordan Henderson to Liverpool and build the squad which also lost Darren Bent to Aston Villa in January. The Black Cats had a mixed season which saw them begin and end relatively well, but they endured a long mid-season slump after the departure of Bent and a string of injuries to key players saw manager Steve Bruce struggle to find a recognised striker to play.

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has said that he is excited after seeing the fixture list for the new Premier League campaign but suggests it is one of the toughest starts to the season he has had as a manager.

Spurs begin at home to Everton, before a trip to Old Trafford and matches against top-four rivals Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal.

The club are looking to improve on last year’s fifth-place finish and experience Champions League again after last year’s run to the quarter-finals.

Speaking on the club’s official website, Redknapp said it was an extremely difficult start to the season for Spurs, but one that he was looking forward to.

He said: “That’s one of the toughest starts I’ve had in all my years as a manager.

“Everton are a strong side and always difficult to beat, United at Old Trafford is as tough as it gets and then City at home makes for a difficult start.

“But they are all great games to look forward to, big homes games especially in front of a packed White Hart Lane. They are all exciting games.

“It would be great to get off to a good start and we’re all looking forward to it.”
