Medical Services minister Anyang’ Nyong’o yesterday refuted claims by Finance minister Uhuru Kenyatta that his ministry had pending bills amounting to Sh1.6 million.

Nyong’o told the press in his office that the Kenya Medical Supplies Agency which handles procuring for the two health ministries had cleared all outstanding debts. “It is true that a bill of Sh1.6 million was incurred during the Financial Year 2007/2008,” Nyong’o said. “However, the Treasury availed the funds which have been paid and there are no pending bills in Kemsa.”

Nyong’o said that on assuming office at the ministry, he set up a special task force to establish all debts within the ministry. He said that he was perturbed by Uhuru’s claims. “Kemsa is doing well and is in the process of implementing changes recommended by the special committee.” “What the minister (Uhuru) said is a lie, if it was history he should have said so,” Nyong’o said.
