Liverpool’s Greek central defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos has had his terms at Anfield extended by 12 months after activating an option in his contract, according to reports.
The former AEK Athens stopper arrived on a two-year deal in 2009 but fulfilled a clause in that agreement to extend the contract if he played in a certain amount of games last season.
However, the extension does not necessarily mean that Kyrgiakos, who turns 32 next month, is definitely in manager Kenny Dalglish’s first-team plans for the upcoming season.
Kyrgiakos, who secured 61 caps for his country before retiring from international football last year, is currently fourth in the pecking order in his position, with Jamie Carragher, Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger all ahead of him.
And there is speculation that Liverpool may yet look to strengthen even further in central defence, leaving Kyrgiakos potentially out of the reckoning for places.
The Greek has proved useful whenever called upon over the past year, though, going so far as to be named Liverpool’s Player of the Month in October.
Kyrgiakos began his professional career at Panathinaikos and has also appeared for Rangers and Eintracht Frankfurt.
