HUNDREDS of visitors to the Gondwana Collection stand at the recent Tourism Expo took part in the Shebeen Name of the Year competition.

The standout winner, chosen from photographs of 400 shebeens taken in northern Namibia and Katutura, was ‘Down Corruption Bar’.

Each N$10 collected for entry into the competition is being paid into the Gondwana social fund, which at the moment is focused on assisting projects at the Okaukuejo Primary School on the border of Etosha National Park. School principal Erastus Shipahu already has plans how to use the money. He wants to enlarge the school’s hostel and construct an area where children can have their meals with a roof over their heads – currently they eat at stone benches and tables in the sun.

Gondwana entered all participants in the shebeen name competition in a final draw. On Saturday night Christian Detering won the grand prize of 101 nights at Gondwana accommodations worth N$80 000.

The Gondwana stand this year drew large numbers. It was modelled on the popular Oshebeen bar at the Etosha Safari Camp. Musicians Leonard Gewers and Stephanus Gaëb provided live music at night, mirroring a lively shebeen experience for visitors.
