Chelsea forward Salomon Kalou has revealed the reason behind the team’s disappointing season, saying players who did not make the starting XI would sulk.

But Kalou believes that the side can bounce back and compete once more in the new campaign.

“Our players were preoccupied with finding out who was in the side and who wasn’t. This disrupted our progress,” Kalou said, according to The Sun.

“It is better to build a team gradually than to bring in players who will pout and sulk.”

Kalou made 40 appearances last season, the majority of which were from the bench, scoring 12 goals in the process as Chelsea ended the campaign nine points behind champions Manchester United.

Chelsea are soon expected to name Carlo Ancelotti’s successor at Stamford Bridge, with former boss Guus Hiddink favourite to take the reins, and Kalou feels that last season was just a blip for the Blues.

He added: “Our team is used to winning and when we end up losing, things become hard for us.

“Yes, we won nothing this year but successive seasons do not resemble one another.”
