Tripoli blasts near Gaddafi base

Six explosions have been heard in the centre of the Libyan capital, Tripoli, near the fortified compound of Col Muammar Gaddafi.

Smoke could be seen rising in the area at dawn on Thursday, Reuters reports.

The compound has been the target of a number of Nato air strikes in recent months.

The alliance imposed a no-fly zone in Libya in March as Col Gaddafi’s forces threatened to overrun rebel-held parts of the country.
