Two students, from two selected junior high schools (JHS) from the Tema West sub-metro, on Thursday June 2, 2011, at the Our Lady of Mercy (OLAMS) Senior High School, Tema, exhibited in-depth knowledge on nature and environment to win a Unilever Ghana-organised World Environmental Day Quiz competition.

Master Ransford Narh, 12, a student from the Naylor Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Junior High School (JHS), and Miss Richlove Emmanuela Asoku, 14, from the Holy Child Roman Catholic (R/C) School, garnered a total of 43.5 points to beat the Tema East and Kpone-Katamanso sub-metros, which scored a total of 35.5 and 33 points respectively, after four rounds of entertaining competition.

The Unilever Ghana organised competition, which was on the theme ‘Forest: Nature at Your Service,’ formed part of activities to mark this year’s World Environmental Day, which fell yesterday, Sunday June 5, 2011.

The Tema West sub-metro took a substantial lead from the first round, and the two students ensured that they maintained the lead to the last round, to enable them and their sub-metro emerge as the 2011 champion of the World Environmental Day quiz competition.

Congratulating the winners on their comprehensive knowledge on nature and the environment, Mr. Kofi Essuman, Quantity Assurance Manager for Unilever West Africa, underscored that the time had come for schools to imbibe in pupils the need to keep their environments clean to make it friendly for generations to come.

He observed that in this time and age, a lot of human activities were posing a critical danger to the environment, “and so if we all do not wake up to champion the cause of devising a modern way of protecting our environment, we will all wake up one day to see that everything around us is destroyed.”

He told the students to take the bold step to educate their colleagues and families on the need to preach afforestation, dispose of garbage properly, green their areas, and practise tree planting in their homes to promote environmental sustainability.

Officially launching the Unilever Ghana Schools Environment Programme, Mr. Essuman announced to the schools that an environmental team from his outfit would randomly visit them to observe their water, sanitation and hygiene, parks and gardens, housekeeping and 1st Aid health among others, “and the school that will conform with these requirements would be awarded by Unilever Ghana Limited,” he said.

The Chairman for the occasion, Mr. Kwesi Hutchful, Tema-Metro Education Director, on his part, advised the students to practise sustainable environmental living to make the world a better place to live.

He said the depletion of the environment by human activities and electrical equipment that emit toxic gases can be redefined should the practise of the sustainability living plan be adhered to by all and sundry.

He commended Unilever Ghana Limited on its constant efforts to ensuring that education and healthy living were inculcated in every child, via programmes such as the quiz competition, hand washing campaign, and among others.
