THE newly elected speaker of Gombe State House Assembly, Alhaji Inuwa Garba has assured the people of the state that the House will pass bills that will aid the executive arm of government in its effort to fight the menace of thugs locally referred to as Kalare.
The speaker gave the assurance during a chat with newsmen shortly after he was sworn in, noting that it is his hope that his colleagues would give him the needed cooperation so as to remain focused and visionary in dealing with legislative matters.
Garba, who was the deputy speaker of the House, added that the 4th assembly under his leadership would not allow itself to be a rubber stamp for the executive arm of government, saying he would ensure that every request sent to the House from the executive must be debated and deliberated upon before acting on it.
He added that the House was ready to cooperate with Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, considering his perceived determination to take the state to a greater height.
The new speaker stated that for now he will not be promoting the agitation for the independence of the legislative arm of government, saying the time for that was not yet ripe for the nascent democracy in the country.
According to him, the independence of the legislative arm is tantamount to the promotion of corruption in the country, citing example of the present scam involving the immediate past leadership of the House of Representative.
Accordingly, Maman Alkali, Lamido Buba and Umaru Barambu emerged as Majority leader, Deputy Majority leader and Chief Whip respectively, while Sunday Danlele was elected as the Deputy Chief Whip.
