New Liverpool signing Jordan Henderson has vowed to repay the faith the club have shown in him and make a big impression at Anfield next season.
The former Sunderland midfielder finalised his reported £16 million transfer to the Reds last week before travelling with the England Under-21s to Denmark for the European Championships, and he revealed he is determined not to let the large fee affect his game.
“I don’t really make the figures up but it just shows that Liverpool have faith in me,” he said.
“So I’ll work hard and improve as a player and learn a lot and hopefully I can repay them.”
Henderson was the first signing at Anfield this summer as Kenny Dalglish begins to build a squad ready to challenge at the top of the Premier League table next season, and the young midfielder is confident his new team-mates have got what it takes to break into the top four and qualify for the Champions League.
“Every player wants to play in the Champions League, but I think we’ve got to focus on the Premier League first,” he admitted.
“Hopefully, this season can be a good season for Liverpool.”
The youngster had little time to celebrate his big-money move due to international duty, and he was in action for the England Under-21s in their opening 1-1 draw against Spain, a result the midfielder was pleased with.
“Spain made it really difficult for us,” he added.
“They’re obviously a gifted team on the ball but I think that we showed great character and a good attitude to stay in the game and get the late goal.
“I think that’s what the positives were that we’ve got to take out of the game.
“We didn’t have much of the game but we managed to get something out of it.”
