Barca appeared in pole position last week when the Chilean described a switch to the Camp Nou giants as a dream move, but Pozzo's latest statement suggests they could be usurped by the English side. Pozzo, who says he has already turned down a substantial bid, believes City's cash could see them beat Barca to his signature despite the 22-year-old's strong links with the Catalans, identifying the Eastlands outfit's ability to splash the cash as a key factor.

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has admitted that Charles N’Zogbia is likely to move away from the Latics this summer.

Whelan has said that N’Zogbia has expressed his desire to move away from the club in order to keep up his chances for international selection.

He told the Evening Post: “There is quite a lot of interest in Zoggy. He has said to me ‘I’ve enjoyed my time at Wigan but I want to move on to other things’.

“He’s very proud now of playing for France again and he feels a bigger club would be better for him for selection for France, for which we have to agree and I’ve said we will not stand in his way.

“There have been plenty of enquiries but the season is still a bit away yet and the transfer market is only just beginning to kick in.

“They’re all on holiday but we’ll come together in a fortnight and sort it.”

Whelan admits that he will always allow people to leave if they want to because he is only interested in people who are committed to the Latics.

He added: “If a player comes in saying he’s unhappy playing for Wigan Athletic, ‘I want to move’ – I’m not going to say ‘you can’t move’.

“I’m going to say ‘okay, well put you on the list, try and find you a club, as long as we get the right fee, we’re going to let you go’.

“If people want to employ someone, they should have the right to do that.

“I wanted Roberto to want to stay at Wigan, which he did. But if he was thinking, ‘I’d like to leave’, he’s half-hearted and that is no good.”
