Tottenham full-back Kyle Walker is hoping an impressive performance for the Under 21s in the European Championships will lead to a full England debut.

Walker played well in England’s first group game against Spain on Sunday and he is hoping that further solid appearances will catch the eye of England manager Fabio Capello.

He told reporters: “I’d love to play for my country – it’s my ambition.

“When I first started playing football at seven, that’s what I wanted to do.

“I just have to keep working hard on the training pitch and see what happens from there.”

Walker’s attacking intent has never been in doubt but his defending on Sunday caught the eye of observers and the full-back is hoping this will keep his name on the team sheet.

He added: “I’m a defender – that’s my main job. Attacking’s just a bonus of my game.

“You’re going to need to speak to other people to see if they liked how I defended.

“There’s a great squad there and it’s difficult to get a place, so I was happy when my name went up.

“I just have to show that I do deserve the shirt and I’m going to keep it.”
