Kenya: Telkom And Strathmore Stretch Lead

Nairobi — Champions Telkom Orange women and Strathmore men crushed their opponents to cement their respective league’s leads at the weekend.

After a first leg scare, Telkom left nothing to chance against the struggling United States International University-Africa (USIU-A) to hand the students a thumping 4-0 defeat at City Park on Sunday.

The success enabled Telkom uphold their unbeaten run into their third season and stretch their lead to 15 points, five off Strathmore, who faltered to settle for a 1-2 draw with Vikings on Saturday.

Telkom’s Barbra Simiyu wrapped up the proceedings in the 64th minute when she scored her first goal against her former club.

Earlier, Jacqueline Mwangi, Jackline Ogot and Betty Tioni had clinically nodded home in the 17th, 31st and 32nd minutes for a 3-0 lead at the intervals.

“It’s good to see Simiyu has regained her form. Margaret Rotich is also particularly awesome on the outside to compliment most moves,” said Telkom coach Jos Openda.

Gladiators swift and suave

Strathmore Gladiators were swift and suave as they mutilated defenceless Greensharks 5-0 on Saturday.

What could have been a sizzling sixth goal by skipper Allan Iningu to coincide with the shooter was strangely disallowed by the umpires.

Brian Musasia sunk Sharks with a hat-trick (24th, 26th and 59th) and minutes later Davis Wanangwe added a brace in the 50th and 52nd minutes.

Strathmore extended their lead to four points with a total 18 as Greensharks remained second on 14.

“Our opponents were not playing wide, especially when they came to our 25, so we had to effectively counter that by sealing the midfield, leaving little room for them to manoeuvre,” said Telkom captain Doreen Baraza.

Cythia M’muka was graceful in defeat: “Our backline dipped but congratulations to the girls for putting up a brave fight.”
