Alan Pardew pessimistic over future of Liverpool target Jose Enrique: It looks like he does not want to do a deal with Newcastle

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has revealed that Spanish full-back Jose Enrique is stalling on a new contract with the club.

Enrique was one of the team’s most consistent performers last season and Pardew was hoping to tie the defender down to a long-term deal with his current contract due to expire next year.

The 25-year-old, who has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool, has stalled on accepting the offer and Pardew appears resigned to losing his player.

He told the Evening Chronicle: “At the moment it looks like he doesn’t want to deal with us.

“We’ve been asked to make him an offer, but there’s been no progress since then. I still hope we can do something, but at the moment, we’re still waiting for Jose.

“I don’t think there’s anything more I can really add on that situation at this stage.”

If Enrique does not sign a new contract in the near future then it is likely the North East club will look to cash in on him with Pardew looking for around £10 million for the player’s services.

Newcastle have already started looking for a replacement and have made a £1m bid for Swansea left-back Neil Taylor.
