The First Lady, Dr. Mrs. Ernestina Naadu Mills has underscored the importance of governments investing in girl child education as a major move to reducing poverty across the globe.
She said women across the world have and continue to play pivotal roles in the development of their communities through their selflessness and dedication.
The first lady made these remarks during her commencement speech at the Goodwin College in Connecticut, USA where she was honoured with a doctorate degree in humanity.
The award is in recognition of her contribution to women empowerment in Ghana. It was also for a role in improving the quality of education she has provided through her advocacy activities in the country.
Dr. Mrs Naadu Mills further emphasized that, countries that focus on improving the quality of education for the girl child stand to benefit economically and called for a concerted effort at ensuring that priority is given girls who compete with their male counterparts for education.
The first lady Dr. Mrs. Naadu Mills used the occasion to call on governments and societies that still discriminate against the girl child to eliminate such acts.
She made particular reference to socio-cultural practices that tend to hinder the progress of girl child education which she advocated strongly for a reform, to allow them develop their potentials to the fullest.
The first lady was grateful to Ghanaians particularly her husband President John Atta Mills, for providing her support in all her endeavors.
