Manchester City have reportedly joined Chelsea and Manchester United in the fight to sign Tottenham’s star midfielder Luka Modric.

Modric has persistently been linked with moves away from the club and after Tottenham’s failure to reach the Champions League next season it is thought that there will now be a scramble to sign a player who is in search of European football.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is a known admirer of the Croatian playmaker, though with Roberto Mancini reportedly ready to treble Modric’s £55,000-a-week-wages and Chelsea desperate for Champions League success, United could be priced out of a move for their long-term target.

Manchester City will be able to offer the player Champions League football and are ready to tempt Tottenham into a deal by opening the inevitable biding war at £30 million.

Tottenham will be reluctant to lose such a key player, whom Harry Redknapp has previously described as ‘irreplaceable’, though any deal could hinge on Modric’s desire to play Champions League football next season.

Modric has consistently refused to end the speculation about his future, leaving the door open for any suitors to move for him.

“If there will be an offer which will be good for Tottenham and for me also, then a transfer is of course possible,” Modric said in an article in The Daily Mail.

“I’m a Tottenham player and will be in London on July 7 to begin preparing for the season, but I want to say that transfers could occur later.”
