Ghana captain John Mensah says the Black Stars defeat to South Korea this week can be attributed to fatigue.
Africa’s highest ranked team was beaten 2-1 by the Asians in an international friendly in Jeonju on Tuesday but the match came just three days after the Nations Cup against Congo in Kumasi.
The Sunderland ace insists the long journey from Accra to Seoul on Saturday, a day after the game in Kumasi took its toll on the players.
Mensah, who missed the game through injury, told Citi FM that despite the defeat the Black Stars excelled given the difficulties of the long journey.
“We know it’s a friendly game and we also know that it’s important because of the FIAFA ranking,” Mensah said.
“I know the guys did well and played their hearts out but unfortunately they couldn’t win the game.
“But I think they did a massive job for the nation looking at the way they travelled from Ghana to South Korea right after the Congo match.
“It was a long journey and they fought hard for the nation. I think it’s a lesson so we will learn from it,” he noted.
The defeat was Goran Stevanovic’s first loss since he took over as coach of the Black Stars in February.
