Assab — The inhabitants of Southern Red Sea region said that endeavors to maintain environmental sanitation and the introduction of toilets are playing significant role in reducing communicable diseases.

They indicated that they were previously susceptible to various types of diseases due to lack of sanitation, but at present, such problems are effectively addressed thanks to the continuous campaigns and lectures conducted regarding sanitation and the putting in place of toilet facilities.

The head of environmental sanitation unit in the region, Mr. Efrem Zekaria, explained that community-based sanitation campaigns have been underway in 49 villages since 2009, and that Bela’bui, Mekaakaa, Gahiro, Adi-Gefn, Igroli, Hamerti and Eitos could be cited as being exemplary.

The head of the Health Ministry’s branch office in the region, Mr. Asefaw Gebremichael, said that the prevalence of communicable diseases have dropped significantly, and called on the general public to sustain the achievement registered so far.
