THE MMD has warned its senior members against using President Rupiah Banda’s name to force lower organs of the party to adopt them as parliamentary candidates in this year’s elections.

Deputy national secretary Chembe Nyangu said at a media briefing in Lusaka yesterday the party had identified some senior members who were lying that President Banda preferred them to their competitors.

Mr Nyangu said this had put new applicants at a serious disadvantage and that the president was disappointed because he had not endorsed anyone.

He said President Banda wanted the lower organs to independently check the applicants without influence from anyone.

Mr Nyangu said applications were open even to people who had never been members of the party, which was the reason the advertisements did not specify how long an applicant should have been a member of the ruling party for them to qualify.

He said there had been an overwhelming number of applications already received and that the party would ensure that the process was transparent because the party was looking for credible leadership.
