Tottenham have had a £8.9 million bid rejected by Palermo for Uruguayan striker Abel Hernandez, according to the player’s agent.

The 20 year-old is one of a crop of promising South Americans currently at the Sicilian club, including Javier Pastore and Ezequiel Munoz.

Hernandez has recently broken into Uruguay’s senior team, making an impressive start, netting twice in his first three games.

But if Spurs want to land the player, the agent believes they will have to at least double their original offer to meet his market value.

Vincenzo D’Ippolito told calciomercato.it: “I know Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini has turned down the offer.

“If indeed it was €10m (£8.9m) then it would be considered too low as the value of the player in the market is of €20m (£17.8m).”

Hernandez is contracted with Palermo until 2013 and has also reportedly drawn interest from many of Italy’s top clubs.

Spurs are looking to refresh their striking options with Roman Pavlyuchenko and Robbie Keane both being linked with moves away from White Hart Lane.

Jermain Defoe also missed much of last season due to injury and in his place, Peter Crouch was far from prolific in the league, scoring just four from 29 appearances, although he fared much better in the Champions League, notching seven in 10 games.

Starlet Hernandez has made 49 appearances for Palermo since joining from Penarol in Februaru 2009, scoring 10 times.
