Policemen from the FCT Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) yesterday raided Bakassi, a community at Garki village, Abuja and arrested 702 persons. Also discovered were 50 bags of Indian hemp, four locally made pistols, hundreds of giant cutlasses, crowbars, swords, curved knives and other dangerous weapons. One of the suspects, Mr Yunus Isah, admitted he was a robber

A two-year-old girl, Dorcas, is presently in need of an urgent surgery to enable doctors correct the small shape of her skull, which can no longer contain her brain.

The child, who requires N2 million for the surgery, can neither see, walk nor talk like other kids of her age, and just lies on her back, smiling when touched.

Dorcas stays at Hope for Survival Orphanage Home at Gishiri village, Abuja and was abandoned by her mother when she was only seven months old at Mararaba in Nasarawa State.

Our reporter gathered at the orphanage that the child’s mother upon alighting from a vehicle coming from Lagos; gave the baby to one Miss Josephine Christopher, on the antics that she wanted to purchase something close by but disappeared into thin air.

The abandoned child was taken to Division ‘A’ Police Station at Mararaba and later handed over to officials of the social welfare unit in Karu, who in turn gave her to the Hope for Survival Orphanage Home, Gishiri, for proper care.

Dr Agnes, the child’s paediatrician at Ferodrod Medical Centre Abuja, describe the baby’s health problem as ‘Cerebral Palsy’, a term used to refer to a group of complications that affects movement and posture, as a result of damages or failure in the development of  parts of the brain, which controls movement.

This condition according to the paediatrician, developed in the baby as a result of some drugs her mother took, while trying to abort her in the womb but failed. She explained that the drug causes her skull not to grow, as well as compressed the brain, thereby preventing it from functioning properly, in giving her body proper co-ordination.

“However, Baby Dorcas’ condition can be improved upon and corrected by a surgery in order for her to live,” the doctor added.

The orphanage officials who love the baby have appealed for financial supports from philanthropists and concerned organization to enable the surgery to be carried out.
