Gambia strolled to an away win to joint Nations Cup host Gabon yesterday.
A lone goal was all but enough to redeem Gambia’s battered reputation at international level. Gambia’s top technical gaffer Paul Put’s one time glowing fame hits a hitch following repeated away test match defeats, most notably their unprecedented battering to minnows Guinea Bissau in Lisbon, Portugal.
A second string Gambian team mends the infectious reputation damaged with clubless striker Njogu Demba- Nyren second-half homer enough to light up a bright image for the visiting Scorpions.
With again many key-players not showing up for the pulsating tie, the red, white, blue and greens took up the show at the West Central African country, however, the first phase ended 0-0, and it was not until in the second-half, when the Scorpions turned the heat on the Black Panthers to steal the headlines, courtesy of a Njogu Demba effort.
The victory against Gabon revives Gambia’s dream for an African Cup of Nations berth, but PP’s side first need to win their remaining two group F games against Namibia and Burkina Faso respectively or face the exit door.
