REPUBLICAN Vice-President, George Kunda has said the Government is committed to the development in sports in the country through the provision of various sports facilities.

Kunda has also said Zambia was lucky to have a head of state like President Rupiah Banda who had a lot of interest in the development of sports in the country.

The Vice-President said this in Muchinga constituency in Serenje in Central Province yesterday after donating sets of jerseys and footballs to four basic schools and a youth club.

He said the Government realised the important role sports played in the country not only on the physical aspect, saying that if carefully nurtured, it could bring pride to the nation.

Kunda said it was in schools where future sportsmen were found and only needed to be nurtured, adding that the country should be proud to have a president, who had the interest of developing sport at heart.

“Donations of such facilities also help keep the minds busy and thus keeping them away from engaging in bad vices. As Government we recognise that important role sport plays in lives of many Zambians including the youths who are our future sportsmen,” he said.

Lusibashi Basic School, a youth club and Kamwama Basic School got a set of jersey each while Coffee Basic School got two footballs, Kabwekapela received four footballs, Musamani Basic Schools, three footballs.

Lusibashi Basic School and youth club received three footballs each with Kamwana getting four.

And Lusibashi head teacher, Lynette Kayanda commended Government, saying the donated kit would make the pupils compete favourable with other schools and in the process raise the standards of the game.

Youth club chairperson, Teddy Machila said the youths in the area had for a long time been looking forward to having sport equipment like footballs, jerseys and boots to help improve their game.

Machila pledged to put the sports equipment to good use saying the youth club will even start recruiting more members and help produce future players for the various national teams.
