The Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service has expressed worry about the increase in road traffic offense cases this year.
It says in just five months, a total of 2,500 persons have been sent to motor court through the increased presence of the police on the road and the continuous enforcement of road traffic regulations.
For the whole of last year a total of 5,069 cases were sent to court out of which 3,348 persons were convicted. The Unit said the figures show how alarming the increase has been for 2011.
Speaking to Citi News, the Head of Education, Research and Training at the MTTU, ASP Alexander Obeng, said the police will be more vigilant on the roads for the rest of the year to help reduce the figures.
He however cautioned that no one will be spared when apprehended for violating the traffic regulations.
According to ASP Obeng, “The increase in the number of cases could be because there has been an increase in the number of vehicles that have come in to augment the existing ones, and the vigilance of the MTTU nationwide especially on our highways.
“Most motor traffic offences are street liabilities and sometimes the police does not need laborious investigation processes to establish facts”.
