Desailly, who made 156 appearances for the Stamford Bridge club between 1998 and 2004, saw his former side relinquish their Barclays Premier League title to Manchester United this season and he feels that a world-class creative midfield player would help the club become dominant once again.

Luis Suarez has revealed how his philosophy which he has adopted from an early age, has helped him to achieve four goals and five assists in just 13 Premier League appearences for Liverpool since his January move from Ajax.

The striker has proved so popular amongst fans of the Reds that his name has become a well-known football chant very early on in his Liverpool career.

But just as important as winning over the fans is his doggish performances on the pitch, which he explains will never change.

“Early on in my football career I learned that you never give up,” he told LFC Weekly.

“You never give up on a ball as a lost cause, you fight for everything, you never drop your head for one minute and you keep trying until the last whistle.

“If you know that it’s not your day and things aren’t quite coming off for you, it just means that you try even harder, you close people down and you press and you get tackles in.

“I think it’s important to have that spirit and that never-say-die attitude.”

In 2006, Suarez left Uruguay to make a name for himself in Europe and found his feet at Groingen before making a move to Ajax within 12 months. Now, Suarez is adapting to new surroundings, players and manager for the third time.

“I think I have settled in well, which is very, very important” he said.

“Settling into a new team was always the most important thing about coming here. I think I have done that and it’s happened a lot quicker than I thought it would.

“It’s hard when you come to a new team for the first time as there are lots of changes that you’ve got to adapt to but it’s gone well – and from the very first game really. I am very, very happy here.”
