Kenny Dalglish has reportedly been told that a £20 million offer is what will be required if he is to sign Sunderland midfielder Jordan Henderson this summer.

A report in The Mirror states Liverpool had already agreed to up their bid to around £18.5m over the course of the weekend, but the Black Cats are holding out for more if they are to sell one of their prized assets.

Henderson, who recently earned his first senior cap for England, is due to fly out to Denmark for the under-21 European Championships, but Dalglish is keen tie up a deal in the next 48 hours – before the player leaves for the event.

The possible sale of Henderson could raise the money for Steve Bruce to re-build his team, with the former Manchester United defender said to be keeping tabs on Darron Gibson and Wes Brown, who both have fallen out of favour at Old Trafford.

Danny Welbeck is also being lined up for a possible move away from Manchester, after spending last season on loan at Sunderland.

This summer is also set to be busy one for Dalglish, who is also believed to be interested in signing Blackburn defender Phil Jones, Newcastle’s Spanish left-back Jose Enrique, Ipswich striker Connor Wickham, along with Stewart Downing and Charlie Adam.

Liverpool’s American owners are willing to give Dalglish a £40m war chest, on top of around £30m he could raise from any player sales.

Despite The Reds not achieving Champions League football for next season, Henderson is desperate to make the move, which will see him receive around £4m a year.
