Martin Skrtel, the Liverpool defender who was one of only two outfield Premier League players to play in every minute of every game last season – the other being Everton’s Leighton Baines – has revealed that he is sitting out international duty with Slovakia in order to recover from a thigh injury that has nagged him during 2011.

On doctor’s advice the dominant centre-half missed Slovakia’s 1-0 win over Andorra on Saturday and Skrtel has revealed that it is due to injury that he is having to miss playing for his country.

“It is a minor injury. I had problems with my thighs for the last two months and it was quite painful” Skrtel told Liverpool’s official website.

“My doctor told me to rest so I need to respect his decision. I did speak with Mr Weiss (Slovakia manager Vladimir Weiss) and he knows about my problems.”
