Dirk Kuyt believes Liverpool are still one of the top clubs in Europe despite their recent disappointments, and is confident the club can win silverware again soon.

Kuyt has become a fans’ favourite at Anfield since his arrival from Feyenoord in 2006 as a result of his tireless work rate and knack of scoring goals in big matches, not least his hat-trick against bitter rivals Manchester United in March.

The Dutchman recently signed a contract extension that will keep him on Merseyside until 2013, a decision which he says is borne out of his faith in the ability of the club’s owners and management to return Liverpool to the top table of European football.

“I signed up to a new contract because I have faith in the club,” he told reporters. “Everything I noticed shows the ambitions are high.

“The appointment of Steve Clarke, assistant to Jose Mourinho at Chelsea, is one example. Just a very good on-the-pitch coach. That sort of thing. The club strives again to get to a level that suits the club.

“I feel that I am at one of the top clubs in Europe. The goal is still to become champions and win cups, and I will help.”
