NEA Donates Cleansing Materials to KMC

The National Environment Agency (NEA) on Wednesday, 1st June 2011, held a presentation ceremony to donate assorted cleansing materials to the Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) at their head office on Jimpex Road in Kanifing. This is said to be in support of the implementation of the monthly operation clean the nation, dubbed ‘Set Settal’.

Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Momodou Lamin Badjie, Councilor of Ebo Town Ward in the New Jeshwang constituency, deputising the KMC Mayor, said the materials are very useful in ensuring a clean environment. He said a healthy environment creates a healthy society and nation. Describing NEA as a key partner of the KMC, he expressed the gratitude of Council for this donation of cleansing materials to ensure a clean environment in the municipality. He also thanked the UNDP for funding the project that provides the materials through the NEA.

Mr. Mohammed J. Jabang, Senior Programme Officer at the NEA who also doubles as Desk Officer in charge of the Anti-Littering Regulation, said the donation came as a result of support from the UNDP Energy and Environment Programme. He said the programme is intended to strengthen the capacity of NEA to ensure a healthy environment.

Mr. Jabang said they felt that this should be extended to all the regions and that they have started with the KMC by virtue of their proximity and the fact that NEA is domiciled in the municipality.

He said “this is part of strengthening of the Anti-Littering Regulating enforcement because when you asked people not to litter you also have to help them to provide dust bins to enable them not to litter.”

Mr. Jabang said the materials are given to KMC to be placed at certain locations within the communities to enable them dispose off their litter inside the dustbins.

Mr. Mamadou Jallow, Manager of the Environment and Sanitation Unit at KMC, also thanked the NEA for a timely and useful intervention in boosting the capacity of Council to deliver efficient service. He also called on the communities to support the initiative by keeping their environment clean.

Sheikh Alkinki Sanyang, Communication Officer at the NEA, appealed for the donated materials to be put into good and effective use. He said NEA will continue its collaboration with all their partners for the protection of the environment and development of the country.

The donated materials included 20 large spades, 10 small spades, 20 rakes with handle, 20 cutlasses, 20 waste bins, 20 brooms with handle and 20 wheel barrows.
