England midfielder James Milner: I was at fault for Switzerland’s second goal

Manchester City midfielder James Milner has admitted he was at fault for Switzerland‘s second goal during the 2-2 draw with England on Saturday.

The winger broke from a two-man wall to allow Tranquillo Barnetta’s free-kick to elude Joe Hart and fly into the near corner of the net.

It put the Swiss 2-0 up in the Euro 2012 qualifier, but goals from Frank Lampard and Ashley Young earned Fabio Capello’s side a precious point.

“I thought they were going to take it short so I moved out of the wall giving Harty no chance. So I was poor as well,” Milner said according to the Mirror.

“I hold my hands up for the second goal. But it is how you react to that, and I thought we reacted well.

“But we will have a rest now then come back and try to improve again and play our hearts out. It is in our hands if we win those three games.

“We are more than capable of beating anybody on our day so we have got to learn from our mistakes and prove it.”

After the game Capello claimed his players were tired after a long domestic and European season but Milner disagreed with the Italian.

“There are no excuses,” he said. “We were slow out of the blocks and gave away a couple of soft goals. But all credit to the lads, we bounced back quickly.

“In the second half we had more than enough chances to win. If we were not getting them I would be a bit more worried about not winning games.

“But we can take a couple of positives.”
