The Association of Gunjur Youth for Community Development (AGYCOD) is a registered Association at Attorney Generals Chambers under the Company Acts of 2005 as a Non-profit making Organization. The aim of this is to engage primarily in a series of developmental activities that are of interest to the community. These activities are in areas of Agriculture, Education, Health and Sport.

The Association has embarked on a series of activities in the past with Nova Scotia Gambia Association (NSGA) National Aids Secretariat (NAS), Gambia Committee on Traditional Practices (GAMCOTRAP), Gunjur Health Centre and Gunjur Radio Station (Jannehkoto FM).And up till now some of them are still ongoing activities.

The Community has since benefited from a series of campaigns like malaria sensitization, HIV and Aids sensitization workshop, reproductive health, annual cleansing exercises and radio talk show on drug abuse, teenage pregnancy etc. We believe that the establishment of a library will complement our efforts raising community awareness. As a result it is one of our major projects, but it is without some teething problems. The acquisitions of books are among some of the problems.

The place identified as our proposed library is located in the centre of the village, opposite the clinic. The allocation of the place as a library was possible due to the involvement of the Alkali and Village Elders, who underscored the needs for the availability of learning materials in Gunjur, after brainstorming session with the Executive of the Association.

The place is called “DINBAA BUNTO”. The structure belongs to the community in general and since it is lying idle, the establishment of a library in this place will promote education to the youth in the community. The room space is 8x10msq which can accommodate many learning materials. It will supplement the efforts of the national library and thus the reading culture of the people will improve.

The learning materials require for the proposed library will range from books of all kind, essential to the student needs and use in the middle and upper grades such as; Mathematics, English, Science, Social and Environmental studies books and Novels etc. The provision of books will promote education in Gunjur and surrounding villages.

The association is therefore open all kinds of donation be it in cash or kind especially furniture and equipment, so that our dream can come true. Cash donations should be paid direct to the account with Trust Bank ltd, Account No. 112-778617-01. The setting up of community library is a wonderful concept. We therefore are calling on all to help us have the library going.

Nuha S. Barrow President
