John Terry has said that former Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink would be welcomed back by the players at Stamford Bridge.
Hiddink bridged the gap between former managers Luiz Felipe Scolari and Carlo Ancelotti, and won the FA Cup in his time in England.
Goal.com UK exclusively reported earlier on Friday that the Dutchman had moved a step closer to a return to Stamford Bridge by rejecting a position at PSV Eindhoven.
While Terry was keen to stress the players had no influence on the decision, Hiddink is one of the contenders who would receive a warm welcome.
“We had a great time under him,” Terry told reporters. “He came to Wembley and won the FA Cup, so he’d be welcomed back.
“Whether they’re going to get someone in who knows the club or someone completely different to come in from the outside, that’s completely out of the players’ hands and we’ll leave that to the guys on the board.”
Terry spoke of Ancelotti’s departure, stating that a lot of players were sad to see him go, and also giving his backing to former Chelsea player Mark Hughes, who left his post at west London rivals Fulham.
“There’s a lot of speculation out there at the moment,” he said. “I’m obviously very sad to see Carlo go, we had two great years with him, and I speak for a lot of players there.
“As a group of players we’re just waiting until the club makes their decision and to come back to pre-season again and work very hard under whoever the manager is.”
On Hughes, Terry added: “He is someone that hopefully the club will be talking to. I know Mark… the understanding of the club and knowing how much the club means to supporters will come naturally to those guys, so if he’s linked he’ll be welcomed by the players for sure.”
