One of the three persons who picked up nomination forms to contest the flagbearer position of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Ekwow Spio Garbrah, has bowed out of the race at the last lap. Spio, who had earlier discounted claims that he was only in the race to eventually opt out and endorse the candidature of former first lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, confirmed the suspicion of several political observers when he announced his exit from the race

The Founders’ Bench, a pro-National Democratic Congress (NDC) group based in Tamale, has declared its support for the candidature of the former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings in the July congress of the NDC.

According to the group, the party requires a competent person to improve the fortunes of the party, which was built on the philosophy of probity, accountability, social justice and equality. They attributed the declining fortunes of the party to the actions and inactions of a group of people they described as selfish and greedy.

They wondered why the party promised to create a better Ghana in 2008 but had failed to deliver two and a half years since it won power.

They noted that instead of finding solutions to the numerous problems and challenges facing the country, hypocrisy, weak leadership, love for money and ungratefulness have become the order of the day in the party.

The Founders’ Bench called on supporters and sympathizers of the NDC to rather see the former first lady’s bid to contest the sitting President in the July congress as a way to restore hope, honour and direction for the party to enhance internal party democracy.

A.A Salifu, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the group, at a press conference held in Tamale, noted that he was worried because a party that believed in probity, accountability, social justice and equality had suddenly been invaded by some greedy politicians, who are grabbing properties both at home and abroad.

He wondered whether they could support the prosecution of New Patriotic Party (NPP) officials when their own party faithful were deeply engaged in corrupt practice.

Mr. Salifu expressed regret at the performance of the three Members of Parliament (MP) in Tamale, who according to him, got the nod after capitalizing on the Ya Na murder case

He revealed that they have failed to console the family of the late Ya Na.

They said the MPs would lose their seats in Parliament should they continue to turn against the Rawlingses in the name of defending their ministerial positions and accused them of influencing appointments in the north.

The group also took a swipe at individuals, who think the former First Lady should not contest the sitting president when such personalities are vying for parliamentary seats and blamed the current divisions in the party on the Ahwoi brothers.

They also called on government to make public the report on the review of the Vodafone deal, establish a fresh commission to look into the murder of the Ya Na and expedite action on the prosecution of the Issah Mobila case.

To this end, they appealed to delegates not to sell their conscience but vote for a competent person to bring honour and hope to Ghanaians.
