Ajax are to hold a testimonial for former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar in August.

The match will go ahead on August 3 and will involve former team-mates.

The retired 40-year-old spent made 311 appearancs for Ajax between 1991 and 1999, helping them to a Champions League trophy in 1995 by beating AC Milan 1-0 and the following year they were runners-up – losing to Juventus on penalties.

Van der Sar added another winner’s medal with Manchester United in 2008, where he stopped a Nicolas Anelka penalty in the shootout after the game had ended 1-1.

The following season he set the clean sheet record by not conceding a goal for 1,311 minutes in the Premier League.

After a defeat to Barcelona in Champions League final 2009, the Dutch shot-stopper was looking to add his two winners’ medals by avenging the defeat against the Catalans this season.

However, the Spaniards produced a stunning display to beat United 3-1 ensuring that the Dutchman would not get the hat-trick of medals in his last ever game.

Van der Sar also had spells at Fulham and Juventus and Ajax revealed on their website that they would be paying their own tribute to the Dutch legend with a testimonial at the Amsterdam ArenA in the summer.
