Twenty-seven people died on the spot when a tipper truck and a passenger bus collided head-on between Bono Manso and Jema on the Kintampo-Techiman road early yesterday.
The dead, all passengers on board the bus and the two drivers, were made up of 16 women, 6 men, and 5 children (two boys and three girls) aged below 10 years.
The accident, which occurred at about 1 a.m also left six other people seriously injured. They are on admission at the intensive care unit of the Techiman Holy Family Hospital where the dead have been deposited at the morgue.
Chief Superintendent Joseph Antwi Gyawu, the Techiman Municipal Police Commander, who confirmed the accident to the ‘Times’ on phone, said the 33-seater Yutong bus, (AS 170), was on its way from Kumasi to Zebilla in the Upper East Region while the tipper truck (GT 1172 J), was coming from Kintampo.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as very horrible. The dead included pregnant women with mutilated foetus splashed on the road.
They said the road was accident-prone but never had such high casualties been recorded there.
They attributed the accident to a heavy downpour in the evening, saying the drivers might have had problems with visibility.
Chief Superintendent Gyawu was worried that in spite of efforts to educate drivers, road accident continued and stressed the need for intensification of campaigns.
As at the time of this report the injured were said to be in critical condition and it was feared the death toll might increase.
