The chamber voted 318-97 against the bill, rejecting a call by US President Barack Obama to raise the debt limit without conditions. Republicans have called for spending cuts in return for a debt increase.

Kampala — Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) yesterday released names of athletes selected for the East Africa Championships in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on Saturday.

The athletes on the team include Praise Demus, Geoffrey Akena , Waiswa Lukungu, Inya Lazarus and Ben Siwa. They are joined by a women’s team comprising Emily Nanziri, Justine Bayiga, Agnes Aneno, and Halima Nakaayi. The team left the country yesterday and face competition from Kenya, Rwanda and the hosts.

National coach Jimmy Issamat told Daily Monitor that his selection is based on merit and discipline. “This squad is a combination of experienced and young runners with the chance to learn and also gain confidence.”

Apart from contending in the flat races of 100m, 200m and 400m, Uganda will also field teams in the two relay 4x100m and 4x400m races.

The Uganda Athletics Federation has lined up the East Africa regional championships as one of the international events to assist sprinters qualify for the World Championships and other international competitions this year.
