His Majesty King Mswati III has stopped the much talked about Silver Jubilee celebrations in light of the economic crisis.

Sources revealed that the King felt the country was not currently in a position to host the celebration its importance not withstanding though.

His Majesty did not celebrate his birthday on April 19 this year. It was believed that it would be held jointly with the Independence Day on September 6.

“The king is very concerned about the economic climate of the country. If anything, the king is leading by example. He cannot afford to watch the country waste money when it is going through a bad financial patch.

The king has made it clear that the celebrations must be halted until such time the country has enough money,” said a source.

The source said cabinet, through the minister in charge, had been informed of the king’s command. Principal Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Mduduzi Magongo said a decision had been taken on the Silver Jubilee celebrations but stated that the minister would make an announcement soon.

“I would advise you to drop the story and stop rushing things as the minister is yet to make an announcement about the Jubilee,” he said before referring all questions to the minister. Magongo did not give a clear answer on what the decision entailed.

the Minister Chief Mgwagwa Gamedze, was called a number of times and his phone rang unanswered and it was later not available on the MTN network. Members of Parliament expressed concern during the debate of the ministry’s third quarter report, stating that the celebrations could wait until the economic situation normalises. The minister of home affairs had said the event would be “celebrated in a cost effective manner” but did not elaborate.
