NPL Plans New Tournament

LOCAL premier league clubs can look forward to a new football tournament before or during the 2011/12 season, scheduled to kick off in September this year.

The Namibia Premier League’s acting chief executive officer, Joshua Hoëbeb, told Nampa yesterday that talks are underway with a local company to sponsor a new football tournament.

“I cannot reveal the name of the company at this juncture, but I am confident that talks will be successful,” he enthused.

Hoëbeb said talks with Nu Diamond, a local diamond-cutting company, had reached a deadlock, but the NPL has since then approached another company to sponsor a football competition.

Currently the 12 Premier League teams only have the Leo/NFA Cup, which has been described by some football lovers as not ‘enough’ for football competitions.

Meanwhile, with the 2010/11 season having concluded on Saturday, the acting CEO said there is only one outstanding disciplinary issue, which involves Orlando Pirates and Civics.

Civics claimed that Pirates utilised unregistered players during their first-leg encounter last year.

Hoëbeb did not want to elaborate on why it is taking the NPL so long to resolve the matter, only saying that the matter will be discussed today to find an amicable solution. – Nampa
