Midfielder Joey Barton has denied that he has been offered a new contract by Newcastle United on his Twitter account on Sunday.

The 28-year-old is reportedly set to exit St James’ Park after he failed to agree on terms for a new deal at the club with only a year left on his contract.

Barton who joined the club from Manchester City in 2007 for a £5.8million fee previously expressed his happiness with the Magpies and said that he wanted to extend his contract in February even if it
meant a drop in wages.

Boss Alan Pardew told the BBC in December that he fully supported Barton’s stay at Newcastle. However, the midfielder suggested in posts on Twitter that he has not been offered a new contract yet.

”If am not offered a new contract, my hands are tied. I will continue to do everything in my power to bring a trophy to St James next season

”I am an employee so have to be careful here. Everyone knows I’d love to stay, I get on with Pardew fine and are dressing room is 1st class.”

”(…)slight problem is, they dont want to spend any money or pay any wages. It’s genius really ha ha”

”I will tell all when the time is right, basically they want a younger, better, cheaper player (…) can’t blame Mike Ashley and Derek Llambias can you?”
