TELECOMMUNICATION service provider, Huawei Technologies Limited, has commenced the building of a world-class research and development centre that would offer customised services in Nigeria.

The centre, to be completed before the end of this year, is located in Lagos and would be equipped with the latest technology. It would be the first of its kind in Africa by any vendor or ICT related company.

Although the financial cost of the project was not disclosed, the firm had invested over $200, 000 (about N31 billion) on its world-class training centre located in Abuja.

The vice president of the organisation, Leo Chan, who disclosed this at the children’s day celebration organised by NUNGTSO Charity Foundation and Huawei, at the weekend, said Huawei is dedicated to its partnership with the federal government and all its client in the GSM/CDMA market and is committed to enhancing the socio-economic well being of the people through implementation of proper telecommunication projects and investment.

He noted the organisation, in partnership with Galaxy Backbone Plc, is presently deploying e-Government solution adding that the technology would help promote economic growth, narrow the gap between cities and rural and bridge the gap between the rich and the poor.

The vice president said Huawei has been selected by the telecommunication companies in Nigeria to build and manage its network and also to undertake various ICT infrastructure for the federal government.

“These tasks would no doubt, need professional experts from China to compete with the latest technology in the world. We are fast becoming the number one vendor all over the world, as we are already breaking even in the America and European markets. Based on Huawei’s effective competition in Nigeria, the communication quality here turns better and better and cost drops lower and lower,” he said.
