Mexico legend Hugo Sanchez has told Goal.com he hopes Manchester United will win tonight’s Champions League final against Barcelona – for his compatriot Javier Hernandez.

Hugo was part of the great Real Madrid side of the 1980s, but never lifted European football’s biggest trophy.

Chicharito, however, could claim the prize at Wembley tonight – in his first season in Europe.

“I want Manchester United to win it – for Chicharito,” he said.

“Had Real Madrid reached the final I would have wanted them to win, but they did not so I will support my countryman – it would be a great achievement for him and there will be many people cheering him on from Mexico.”

And the former Pumas star believes United can upset Barca.

“Anything can happen in one game and even though Barcelona may be the favourite, Manchester have some great players – and they have Chicharito.”

Hugo adapted quickly to life in Europe after signing for Atletico Madrid in 1981 and later shone brightly at Real, and he has been impressed with Hernandez’s first season at Old Trafford.

“Chicharito has done well, he has scored goals and he is a real talent,” said the former Mexico boss.

HUGO & CHICHARITO | Their debut seasons in Europe
Hugo Sanchez (Atletico Madrid) 1981-82 17 games
12 goals
Javier Hernandez (Manchester United) 2010-11 44 games
20 goals

The 52-year-old, however, believes technology has allowed players to adapt more quickly these days.

“It’s easier now,” he said.

“When I was a player we didn’t have the technology that is available now; there was less access to the matches and everything was new when we moved to Europe.”

Another Mexican, Rafael Marquez, won the Champions League twice with Barcelona – but the New York Red Bulls defender missed the 2009 final through injury.
