Larking about on stage, the boys – or rather, men – of Take That last night began their first tour with Robbie Williams for 16 years.

With 29 sold-out stadium shows in the UK and Ireland, the Progress Live tour, which began in front of 54,000 fans at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland, is the biggest pop tour in British history.

By the time Williams, Gary Barlow, Jason Orange, Mark Owen and Howard Donald play the last of a record eight concerts at Wembley Stadium in July they will have entertained 1.8million fans and earned a reported £50million between them.

Much of the interest yesterday was on Williams. His decision to leave the band at the height of their teen-mania phase in 1995 helped seal their split a year later.

After a reunion at a Children In Need concert came the news last year that he was back for good,  or at least for an album, Progress, and this summer’s tour.

And he is bringing some of his crowd-pleasing solo hits to the shows. So, in addition to band classics such as Shine, Back For Good and Pray, the set list includes a Robbie solo section featuring Let Me Entertain You, Angels and Feel.
