The Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) insist Kolo Toure’s six-month suspension for taking a banned substance is “a proportionate sanction”.

The Manchester City centre-back found out his punishment on Thursday and an Independent Regulatory Commission convened by the FA were satisfied that the player did not intend to use his wife’s water pills to enhance his sporting performance or to disguise the use of other banned substances.

Nonetheless, the PFA has backed the six-month ban slapped on the defender.

A PFA spokesman told BBC Sport: “The suspension is a proportionate sanction for the offence that was committed.

“He missed the FA Cup final and winning their first major trophy in 35 years.

“Plus there was the build-up to City claiming third place for a Champions League spot. So as a consequence of this verdict, his season has been affected significantly.”
