25 April 2011 At least 20 children from Kuwadzana-based Faith and Hope Centre of the Just Children Foundation were treated to some Easter goodies by Athienitis SPAR over the weekend.

A 29-year old pastor, Akwasi Oppong, of the Power of Jesus Church International at Kasoa – Nyayanor in the Central Region, has been caught naked in a hotel at Aboabo, a suburb of Koforidua by the New Juaben Municipal police command, when he forcibly tried to rape one lady, Joyce Odame, a 40-year-old police officer’s wife.

Briefing journalists in Koforidua, the Municipal Police Commander, Superintendent David L.K. Tefutor, said the pastor lured the 30-year-old Joyce Odame to the Amsterdam Hotel under the pretext of delivering her from “evil spirit,” which has collapsed her business.
Superintendent Tefutor said, after suspecting foul play by the pastor, Joyce placed a distress call to a police officer, Lance Cpl. Emmanuel Mensah, her husband’s friend, for rescue.

According to Mr. Tefutor, Pastor Oppong was found naked, when the police officers broke into the hotel room, and caught him in an apparent attempt to rape Joyce, who got married to Elvis Koomson, a police officer, two weeks ago.

The police chief explained that, the pastor, upon noticing police presence in the hotel room, took an empty bottle and hit Lance Cpl. Mensah, who is currently on admission at the Koforidua Central Hospital.

Supt Tefutor said Pastor Oppong managed to escape to a near-by bush, but with the assistance of the Aboabo community youth, the police were able to apprehend him.

However, The Enquirer newspaper Intelligence has it that, at the time of his arrest, more women had queued, waiting patiently for their turn. The pastor is said to have practical experience on the job for eight years.

Meanwhile, when interrogated by the New Juaben Municipal Police Command, Pastor Oppong confirmed the incident, but denied hitting the police officer with an empty bottle.

He told the police that, four days ago, Mr. Koomson, the lady’s husband, a police officer, came to him for an assistance to enable him to travel abroad.

He explained that, the couple, Koomson and his wife, Joyce, booked an appointment with him for a special counseling session for a fee of GH¢60 for the woman and GH¢80 for the husband, but instead of the couple coming at the agreed time, the lady stormed the hotel room alone, hence the incident.

At the time of filing this report, Pastor Oppong was still in police custody, pending further investigations.
