A group known as the ‘Friends of the Federal Capital Territory’ has appealed to the federal government to allow residents of the territory select the next FCT Minister so that he can be accountable to them.

The group also stated that the appointments of past FCT ministers were for political reasons which made it impossible for residents to influence decisions in the territory.

In a letter addressed to President Goodluck Jonathan through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), the group advised the president to reciprocate the goodwill of FCT residents who voted massively for him during the election by appointing a technocrat as a substantive minister of the FCT in line with his vision for transparency.

The letter jointly signed by its Executive Director, Prince Nwazuruahu Shield, Director of Administration, Ode Ogbu Joshua and General Secretary, Dr. Zainab Mohammed, said if an administrator with a listening ear is chosen, he/she would restore the FCT to its original glory through strict adherence to the Abuja Master plan.

According to the letter, “Politicians are only interested in land allocations and contract awards; we need a minister who would develop the FCT because it is time to restore the FCT to its original master plan.”

Other requests made by the group include immediate evaluation of and completion of all ongoing projects and the proactive tackling of growing environmental issues in the FCT, as well as digitalizing the operations of the FCT Administration (FCTA) for optimal efficiency.

The group also called for a review of recent land allocations by past FCT ministers.
