A Canadian teenager has been seriously injured in an explosion at an Ottawa school, officials said.

Witnesses said a drum of peppermint oil ignited, causing the blast that injured the 18-year-old student and several of his classmates on Thursday.

At Ottawa’s Mother Teresa Catholic High School, paramedics initially said the 18-year-old student had died.

They were able to resuscitate him and take him to hospital. The cause of the blast was not known.

The school was evacuated and its 1,400 students were taken to a school nearby, CBC news reported.
